2017 GARDEN SEASON

COLUMBIA PACIFIC FOOD BANK GARDEN

THE FOOD BANK GARDEN YEILDED HARVESTED

A TOTAL OF OVER 3500 POUNDS OF PRODUCE FOR THE FOOD BANK THIS SEASON.

DAY BREAKERS MEMBERS COLLEEN DELONG & MARY WOICCK

HAVE BEEN MEMBERS OF THE GARDEN TEAM SINCE

2012 & 2013 SEASONS.

THE GROUP ALSO INCLUDES SCOTT BAUSKA, PETER SNELL,

ELDON BURGER, THEA HEWLING AND UP UNTIL

RECENTLY STEVE BLANCHARD.

SADLY STEVE RECENTLY PASSED AWAY FROM A

LONG BATTLE WITH CANCER. 

STEVE IS PICTURED 3RD FROM THE RIGHT.

 

 

A CREW FROM DAYBREAKERS GOT TOGETHER ON SATURDAY

APRIL 1ST 2017 TO CLEAN-UP WALNUT TREE PARK.

LAWN MOWING, FLOWERBED EDGING, SHRUB TRIMMING, WEEDING AND PUTTING OUT BARK DUST WERE COMPLETED.

THE CLEAN-UP WAS HEADED BY STAN CHIOTTI AND JOE NELSON.  THEY BOTH HAVE SHARED THE MONTHLY MAINTENANCE OF THE PARK FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS.

DURING THE LAST SUMMER A PROFESSIONAL TREE TRIMMER CLEARED OUT DEAD UNSAFE BRANCHES REDUCING THE LIKELIHOOD OF LOOSING THE TREE DUE TO WINTER STORMS.

THE EVENT WAS EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL NETTING OVER

$1,100.00 FOR THE ST HELENS PUBLIC LIBRARY.  VISITORS

TO THE SALE CAME FROM AS FAR AS CALIFORNIA TO ENJOY

THE OCTOBER ACTIVITIES IN ST HELENS.

THE ST HELENS GARDEN CLUB

CLUB MEMBERS STAN AND LYNN CHIOTTI TREASUER & SECRETARY OF THE

ST HELENS GARDEN CLUB PARTICIPATED IN THE GARDEN CLUB SALE ON

THE BIG PORCH OF THE ST HELENS LIBRARY SATURDAY OCTOBER 22 TO

BENEFIT GARDEN PROJECTS IN THE COMMUNITY. THE GARDEN CLUB

OVERSEES THE PLANNING PLANTING AND MAINTAINING OF THE

TRIANGLE PARK, MC CORMICK PARK ENTRY PLANTINGS AND THE 

BLUE STAR MEMORIAL AREA.  THE GARDEN CLUB WILL HOST THE

ANNUAL FLAG CEREMONY AND HONORING OF VETERANS ON FRIDAY

NOVEMBER 11, 2016 AT 11:00 AM.

PROGRAM OF OREGON FOOD BANK & OSU EXTENSION SERVICE

SEED TO SUPPER IS A COMPREHENSIVE BEGINNING VEGETABLE

GARDENING CURRICULUM DESIGNED FOR ADULTS GARDENING

ON A BUDGET. TAUGHT AT COMMUNITY SITES THROUGHOUT

OREGON BY TRAINED VOLUNTEER GARDEN EDUCATORS,

SEED TO SUPPER HIGHLIGHTS PRACTICAL, LOW-COST TECHNIQUES

FOR BUILDING, PLANNING, PLANTING, MAINTAINING AND

HARVESTING A SUCCESSFUL VEGETABLE GARDEN.

THE PRELIMINARY PLANNING FOR THE COLUMBIA COUNTY

PROGRAM BEGAN WITH A FOOD FORUM FEBRUARY 3, 2015

WITH A PROGRAM OVERVIEW PRESENTATION BY LYNN COX.

THE FOOD FORUM ATTENDEES INCLUDED PEOPLE INVOLVED

WITH LOCAL FOOD BANK GARDENS, FOOD BANKS, SENIOR

CENTERS, COMMUNITY MEALS, SCHOOL NUTRITION PROGRAMS,

OSU MASTER GARDENERS DEMONSTRATION GARDEN, AND PLANT

START PROGRAMS AS WELL AS INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS FROM

RAINIER, CLATSKANIE, SCAPPOOSE AND ST HELENS. FOLLOW-UP

MEETINGS IN NOVEMBER OF 2015 WERE HELD TO FURTHER DEFINE

THE LOCAL CLASSES, ROLES AND SCHEDULES. THIS IS A TRUE

 COUNTY WIDE PROJECT.

TRAINING OF EDUCATORS TOOK PLACE ON JANUARY 6, 2016 

WITH A PRESENTATION BY CHRISTINE HADEKEL OF THE OREGON

FOOD BANK.  MS. HADEKEL IS THE STATE COORDINATOR FOR THE

PROGRAM.  PRESENTATION MATERIALS WERE PROVIDED WITH A

FULL OVERVIEW OF THE CURRICULUM.  ADDITIONAL TRAINING

SESSIONS HAVE BEEN PLANNED AND ORGANIZED BY THE ASSIGNED

EDUCATOR AND MENTOR TEAMS WITHIN EACH COMMUNITY.

ST HELENS FOOD BANK GARDEN 2016

THE 2016 GARDEN SEASON TURNED OUT TO BE QUITE PRODUCTIVE DESPITE THE ERRATIC TEMPERATURES IN THE SPRING.  THIS REQUIRED REPLANTING IN A FEW OF THE RAISED BEDS AND RETHINKING OF THE PLANT CHOICES. A FEW SQUASH STILL REMAIN IN THE GARDEN AND WILL BE HARVESTED IN THE END OF OCTOBER.

THE TOTAL FOR THE 2016 YEAR WAS 3076 POUNDS.

THE ST HELENS FOOD BANK GARDEN HAS  RECIEVED A DONATION OF SEEDS FROM COLUMBIA FEED & ELECTRIC TO BE USED IN THE 2016 GARDEN SEASON. THIS IS THIRD TIME THAT THE FARM STORE HAS BEEN SO KIND TO DO SO.

THIS SPRING 2015 A NEW INTERIOR FENCE WAS INSTALLED TO PREVENT DEER FROM ENTERING THE GARDEN.

 

     

ADDITIONAL HOOP HOUSES WERE ADDED AS WELL AS GARDEN BEDS TO INCREASE GARDEN PRODUCTION.

THE GARDEN SHED WAS GIVEN A NEW SET OF SHUTTERS. FLOWER BED WAS ADDED TO FOCUS ON NATIVE PLANTS.
